History
Kick For Change has been running since 2019. It began in Ladybarn Primary School in South Manchester. It initially began as a full years study - where the children would start their Taekwondo journey in September and grade once per term (every three months for three terms). The aim was that they were able to finish the project as Green Tags and have enough momentum and enthusiasm for martial arts to carry on their journey in to a local club.
The children would have both practical and classroom based sessions. In their classroom studies they focused on personal development through basing their learning around understanding and applying the tenets. In addition, the children learned the geography and history of Taekwondo and learned about the GB Team and focus athletes. This was brought to life by the visits that were established to the GB National Centre.
The success of the project led to it evolving into its current format as we looked to create something that could be replicable in other school settings.
The energetic and dynamic elements of Taekwondo alongside the character development really enhanced our P.E curriculum offer.
We took the core elements of Taekwondo that are highly engaging - such as use pad work and the amazing kicking range of techniques - and focused on short high energy drills and games to fit the lessons and curriculum structure available.
Keeping the focus on having fun and ensuring the right level of challenge to maintain high engagement, alongside the character development focus has resulted in 100% of the Year 3 participants* rated this project as both enjoyable and challenging!
